Jobs to do in the EW at this time of the year

Trees weeding

The growth around the trees is really something! They need regular control, so if you can, just rip up the growth around the trees. You can leave the cut weeds there where you pulled them, as it helps to stop growth.

General weeding

Dandelions seem to be the worst in the spring. A small trowel, dug deep, and lever the roots up. Also, any other weeds and grass that you see can be pulled up. Its not easy to avoid stepping on the seedlings and newly planted area, but it can be done with care.

Watering

We need to keep an eye on the soil and how dry it can get. Whilst the seedlings are trying to grow, it is worthwhile keeping an eye out for soil that has hardened, and plants that are wilting. We can get a bucket of water from the river, using a bucket with some rope. If you try it be careful not to fall in!

And this is what is underneath the weedmat after one year. Clay, needing some humus, and ready to grow plants free of weeds.
